BIO-Protein
BIO-Protein develops processes and a production structure for Norwegian protein extraction from rapeseed and other biomass.

- Category
- Norwegian protein extraction / food / preparedness
- Status
- R&D / process architecture / market and technology validation
- Problem
- Norway depends on imported protein raw materials. At the same time there are Norwegian biomass and side streams with protein that are rarely used for food.
- Solution
- The project studies how rapeseed and other Norwegian biomass can be refined into protein concentrate or isolate. The steps are pretreatment, extraction, separation and membrane purification.
- Technical core
- The process considers defatting, dehulling, pretreatment with ethanol and water, alkaline extraction, isoelectric precipitation and UF/DF among other steps. The goal is a high purity protein isolate with a light colour, neutral taste and higher value in use.
- Modular production
- The project considers modular protein extraction close to the raw material. This can reduce transport, create local value and strengthen preparedness.
- The role of IMISU
- IMISU develops the system and is responsible for commercialisation.
- Wanted partners
- Raw material owners, the food industry, research groups, preparedness bodies, investors and industrial partners.
